"The Nature Group -from tiny insects to soaring eagles, the Nature Group is where photographers come together to capture, celebrate, and protect the natural world"
Exploring the Wild Through Photography
The Nature Group is one of the most active and long-standing groups within the Edinburgh Photographic Society. Our members share a passion not only for photographing the natural world, but also for learning about and respecting it. From the smallest insects and plants to the largest mammals and birds, our interests cover the full breadth of wildlife and the environments they inhabit.
Membership of the Nature Group is open to all EPS members, whatever your level of experience. Whether you are an established wildlife photographer or just beginning to explore nature through your lens, you’ll find a welcoming community and a chance to deepen your skills.
What we do
The Nature Group meets monthly, usually on the first Tuesday, with a varied and inspiring programme. Meetings include:
- Talks by leading UK wildlife photographers and naturalists
- Opportunities for members to present and discuss their work
- Evenings dedicated to exploring the ethical and technical challenges of nature photography
- Occasional events and exhibitions that celebrate nature-focused photography
Competitions and Awards
Our annual competition is for the An Iolair Cup, a long-established award within the Society. Members submit three digital images linked by a theme of their choice, which are judged by an external expert. This cup has become a highlight of the group’s calendar, showcasing both creativity and dedication to the natural world.
In addition, members are encouraged to take part in nature competitions run by the Scottish Photographic Federation, which follow strict rules and guidelines for ethical nature photography.
Exhibitions
The group plans to organise an exhibition of selected nature prints to accompany the EPS International Print Exhibition in August 2026, offering members the chance to share their work with a wider audience.
Ethics in Nature Photography
We are committed to practising photography in a way that respects and protects wildlife. The welfare of the subject always comes first. Our code of ethics underpins everything we do and ensures that our images are made with care for the natural world.
Get involved
The Nature Group is a thriving community where members share knowledge, inspire one another, and enjoy the challenge of photographing nature responsibly. We welcome new members who share our curiosity about wildlife and the natural environment. Do look out for meetings which are posted on our Events Calendar.
