The Role of the Trustees

The Trustees of the Edinburgh Photographic Society are responsible for the overall governance and direction of the charity. Acting as charity trustees under the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, they ensure that the Society operates in line with its constitution, charitable objectives and OSCR regulations.

Trustees are drawn from the Society’s membership and include the President, Senior-Vice President & Treasurer, and others elected by members. Together, they safeguard the Society’s assets, oversee its financial management and make sure that its activities continue to promote photography for public benefit.

Trustees are expected to act in the best interests of the Society, exercise care and diligence in decision-making, and avoid conflicts of interest. They meet regularly to review progress, set priorities, with Council and volunteers.

Council

The Role of the Council

The Council is responsible for managing the affairs of the Edinburgh Photographic Society on behalf of its members. It ensures that the Society’s activities, finances and facilities are run effectively and in line with its charitable purpose.

Made up of the Trustees, key office bearers and elected members, the Council meets regularly to plan programmes, oversee exhibitions and projects, and make decisions on how best to support members and promote photography. It also has the authority to set rules for the smooth running of the Society and its premises.

Council members are elected by the membership and serve fixed terms, with additional members co-opted when needed. Decisions are made collectively and transparently, and all members of Council are expected to act in the best interests of the Society and avoid any conflicts of interest.
