Guidance for New Members

Welcome to the Edinburgh Photographic Society

We’re glad to have you with us. Whether you’re completely new to photography or already confident with a camera, you’ll find a friendly and supportive community here. Our aim is to make it easy for new members to settle in, get involved and feel at home.

As you take your first steps, you may come across a few terms and abbreviations that are used across the Society. We keep a short glossary available for newcomers, and if anything feels unclear, please ask. We would much rather explain something again than have you feel unsure.

If you’re just starting out, we run regular drop-in sessions in the darkroom and studio time designed for beginners. These offer a relaxed way to learn, ask questions and try out techniques without needing to book facilities. When you later decide to take out a paid subscription, you’ll be able to book the studios and darkroom for your own projects.

For those who are new to camera handling, we also point members toward a small set of reliable external guides and resources covering exposure, focusing, basic settings and general camera craft. They’re practical, easy to follow and a helpful companion during your first months in the Society – Photography Fundamentals link.

Take your time as you explore what we offer. Come along to a talk, join a workshop or simply drop in and see what others are working on. If you ever need guidance or encouragement, you’ll always find someone willing to help.
